Navigating Life After Varsity: The Struggle, The Hope, and The Journey to Finding Your Path
Graduation is supposed to be the beginning of something exciting, an entry into the world where all your hard work finally pays off. At least, that’s what I thought when I graduated in May 2024. I imagined the job offers flooding in, a new chapter of stability, financial independence, and career growth. But instead, it’s been months of applying to job after job, attending interviews, and then hearing nothing or receiving rejections. It feels like a never-ending cycle of hope and disappointment.
The rejection hurts more than I ever expected. It shakes your confidence, and the silence from companies can make you feel invisible. But what hurts even more is the comparison. In a world where everyone shares their lives on social media, it's hard not to measure your own journey against what you see. Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn everywhere I look, it feels like others are succeeding while I'm stuck in a waiting game, uncertain of my next move.
It’s easy to look at those posts, filled with promotions, business successes, and beautiful travel pictures, and start questioning your own path. You see friends landing jobs, buying homes, or living lives that seem like they’ve got it all together. Meanwhile, you're stuck in a place of uncertainty, feeling like you're falling behind or missing out. The pressure is real. I know I’m not the only one who feels this. The expectations that come with social media make everything harder to deal with. And on the days when it all feels too much, that creeping doubt begins to take over: Am I even good enough?
Sometimes, these feelings become overwhelming. There are moments when I wonder if I’ll ever find the job I want, or if I’m truly capable of achieving the things I dreamed of. At my lowest points, I’ve even had thoughts I’m ashamed to admit thoughts of giving up entirely. The pressure, the disappointment, the constant comparison it can sometimes feel like too much to bear. I know I’m not the only one who has had those dark, dangerous thoughts. It's painful to acknowledge, but so many of us experience these lows.
It’s terrifying to feel like you’re losing hope. It’s especially scary when you think about how many people feel the same way and, sadly, go through with ending it all. The thought that someone could feel so hopeless that they take their own life is not just heartbreaking, but it’s a real wake-up call. We’re all living with a lot of pressure, and sometimes, it feels like we’re carrying a burden that no one else can see.
But here’s the thing: There is always a way forward. It may not feel that way all the time, but life is worth living, and there is so much more ahead. I remind myself that even though things aren’t going according to the plan I had in mind, it doesn’t mean there isn’t a plan for me for all of us. There is purpose in every struggle, even though it’s hard to see it in the moment. I still believe the best is yet to come. I believe there is something waiting for me, something waiting for you, just beyond the horizon.
The Power of Support Systems
One thing I’ve come to realize over the past few months is how much we need each other. Navigating life after varsity is tough and there’s no guidebook, no map, and no one-size-fits-all answer. We are all trying to figure it out, and the journey is different for everyone. That’s why having a support system is crucial. For me, my family, friends, and loved ones have been my lifeline. On the days when I feel like giving up, when the rejection feels too much to handle, they are the ones who remind me that I’m not alone, that I’m valued, and that I am capable of more than I give myself credit for.
If you’re reading this and you feel isolated in your struggle, know that you don’t have to go through it alone. Having a strong support system people who listen, encourage, and remind you of your worth can make all the difference. We need those people who remind us to take a step back, breathe, and not let the pressure overwhelm us. It’s not easy to ask for help, but it’s okay to lean on others, especially when things feel too heavy to carry by yourself.
It’s also important to remember that not every day is going to feel like a step forward. Some days, it feels like you're stuck. But that doesn’t mean you're failing. That just means you're human. We all have our highs and lows, and it’s okay to not have everything figured out. Life isn’t a race, and there’s no deadline to success. Sometimes, the best things come to us when we least expect them.
Finding Hope Even in Dark Times
I’m not going to pretend that it’s easy, or that I have all the answers. Some days are better than others. But one thing I do know for sure is that life is a gift, and I’m grateful for it. I’m thankful for the breath in my lungs, the people who support me, and the opportunities that lie ahead no matter how far off they might seem. Even when it’s hard to see, I believe that there’s a reason we’re here, and that something bigger than us is at work.
There are so many ways to find purpose and meaning in this world. Whether it’s pursuing a creative passion, exploring freelance work, or starting something completely new, there is always a way to move forward. And while it may not look like what you thought it would, it doesn’t mean it’s any less valuable or rewarding.
In moments of doubt, I remind myself that just because things aren’t going as planned doesn’t mean it’s the end of the road. I still have dreams to chase, and so do you. The world is full of possibilities, and the things that are meant for us will come, even if it’s not on our own timeline.
So, if you're reading this and you feel like you’re at a low point whether it’s from rejection, comparison, or just the weight of life know that there is hope. It may not feel like it right now, but things will get better. You are worthy of the life you dream of, and I truly believe that the best is yet to come. No matter what you're going through, there is always something to be thankful for, even if it’s just being alive, breathing, and having the chance to try again.
You are enough, and you are not alone in this. You matter, and you have so much to offer this world. Keep pushing forward, and trust that your journey is leading you exactly where you need to go.
There’s a Purpose for You And for All of Us
Let’s keep going, together. The best is yet to come, and I truly believe that.
